Top Seven Sports Movies In The U.S.

Making Super Bowl predictions continues to be something that takes up a ton of time for sports fans, but that didn’t always used to be the case. Before everything turned digital or online, sports fans were able to get their entertainment from watching movies about sports.

There are still sports movies being made to this day, but it seems like we are well past the glory days of when these hit shows really made an impression. There are so many great sports movies out there, and most people could easily rattle off 25-30 movies that could be in their top 10.

Instead of going that deep, though, coming up with the best seven sports movies in the U.S. is a better task. Without further ado, here is that list.

7. Rudy

Notre Dame Fighting Irish football is one of the most popular teams in the United States, and that team was featured in the movie Rudy. This was a film that was based on a true story about a walkon that tried out and eventually made the Notre Dame football team.

The ending scene in Rudy is one of the best in sports movie history, and there are also some great speeches made throughout the film. Even if you don’t love Notre Dame, you will be rooting for the Irish in this one.

6. Field of Dreams

Field of Dreams is always going to be on the list of best sports movies in the United States because it is America’s pastime. This movie is also a story about a father-son relationship, and it is all woven together just perfectly.

This movie has also been in the news a bunch of late as Major League Baseball is now playing games back at the site of the old movie location.

5. Remember the Titans

A good movie tells a great story, and that’s exactly what takes place in Remember the Titans. Set during the Civil Rights Movement in Virginia, this movie follows an integrated high school football team as they try to navigate through a season and through life.

There are plenty of twists and turns in this story, which is largely based on a true story. It also comes with one of the best soundtracks in movie history, which is never a bad thing.

4. Hoosiers

The NCAA Tournament is one of the most popular sporting events in the world, and it’s partly due to the Cinderella stories. Hoosiers is the ultimate Cinderella story on a basketball floor, and it comes from the basketball-crazed state of Indiana.

This is another movie that is even better because it’s based on a true story, and the old gym is still standing to this day. If you mention this movie, then everyone knows what you are talking about.

3. Rocky

Rocky was a massive hit when it was first released, and it has continued to be popular over the last few decades. Not only were there a number of sequels made after the original Rocky, but it also led to an entirely new series being created.

Rocky Balboa is the true American underdog story, which makes it an easy person to root for. You could make a case about which of the sequels was the best, but the original Rocky definitely stands out from the rest of the pack.

2. Bull Durham

There are some great choices in the sport of baseball, including an earlier movie on the list. For a movie to be great, though, it has to blend sports and real life, which is what Bull Durham does to perfection.

Bull Durham follows a minor league team that continues to get into hijinks throughout the year, and a veteran catcher is trying to get them through it. There is also a classic love story included, and you will hear some great quotes about baseball and life in this one.

1. Hoop Dreams

The best sports movie of all time isn’t one that has been seen by millions of people, but that doesn’t take away from the greatness of it. Hoop Dreams was made back in 1994, and it is still one of the best documentaries ever made, regardless of the genre.

This movie is a true story about two inner-city Chicago basketball players as they try to navigate through their HS years and move into college. You get a behind-the-scenes look at the HS basketball scene in Illinois at the time, and it’s filled with some future NBA stars.

Hoop Dreams is one of those movies that you can’t stop talking about after you watch it for the first time.
