There is a major denim trend that took over our wardrobe in the nineties that is making a comeback right now and it is low rise jeans. The trend of low-rise jeans in the ’90s and ’00s, can be credited to Alexander McQueen, who debuted a pair of extremely low-riding pants, referred to as Bumsters, during his debut collection in 1994. McQueen would go on to include this style in a few subsequent collections. It seems the late designer’s brand is trying to bring the trend back, with low-rise jeans appearing in two Alexander McQueen shows in the last three years, most recently in its Spring 2019 collection.
However, after over a decade in the safe clutch of high-rise and mid-rise waistbands, We’ve all gotten used to the flattering cinch and proportion control they offer. While we can all appreciate its importance in the canon of denim, We’ve already lived through the height of the low-rise trend as an awkward adolescent in the 2000s.
A recent Instagram post saw Bella Hadid rocking low-rise combat pants has prompted an urgent, quite startling question: is the low-rise back? Surprisingly, it looks that way. Emily Ratajkowski, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Hailey Bieber have all hopped on board lowering their waistlines in a variety of daring low-rise denim.
Back in the mid-1800s, when jeans were first invented, they were only popular amongst miners and workers who needed something sturdy and reliable to wear. It took a few more decades before jeans became a staple worn by both men and women on a regular basis. It wasn’t until the 1930s that jeans became more mainstream when they entered the Hollywood scene in popular Westerns.
Back then, jeans were associated with cowboys and the movie stars who played them. Later, in the very early 1950s, jeans were just starting to become a popular fashion trend because of actors like Marlon Brando and James Dean wearing them quite regularly. Even as they became more trendy, they still had a Western feel to them and were predominantly worn by men. It wasn’t until 1952 when Marilyn Monroe wore a pair in her film “River of No Return” that they became a fashion trend for women as well.
Jeans were still boxy and cuffed in the early 1960s, but as the years went on, they became more casual and more embellished.They became more mainstream and less Western-inspired, too. Jeans started to become more slim-fitting in the late 1970s, with straighter legs rather than flares. For example, Levi’s 505 jeans were particularly popular, especially in the music scene. You can tell by getting a glimpse of the Ramone’s 1976 self-titled album, where they are all wearing 505s.
Low-rise jeans came back into style in 1994, thanks to Alexander McQueen and then Madonna, who wore low rise jeans in a popular ad. It seems however, that low rise jeans are making a comeback with celebrities and instagram models showing off their toned abs with the figure hugging jeans and crop tops.
