Whether you’re thinking of moving, or you’re staying put but want to rejuvenate your home, here are eight ways to add value to your house.
1. Painting
A good coat of paint can work wonders by transforming a tired space, and heavy traffic areas such as stairs and hallways can get tired and grubby very quickly. You don’t need to redesign each room, but a bright fresh coat will make your house seem much more inviting – and do buy good quality paint or you might find yourself having to do more coats than you were expecting!
2. New windows
New windows such as UPVC Windows are a great investment. The thought of having to install double glazing can really put buyers off, but in truth it needn’t be a big expense or inconvenience if you use a reputable firm. If you are planning to sell it is an investment worth making, as it will significantly increase the value of your home. As well as the aesthetic improvements, you should also see a drop in your energy bills as the house will be much more energy efficient while providing you with better noise insulation too.
3. New doors
Kerb appeal is a major factor when people look at houses, and a well fitted front door that is in keeping with the style of your home will speak volumes about the quality of the property inside.
4. Painting the outside
Likewise, with the front door, take a look at the exterior of your house – could it do with smartening up a bit? It’s not a job that needs doing on a regular basis but once a house is tatty outside you can’t help but notice. It’s easy to let this slip past you as you largely see it from indoors!
5. Lighting options
Interior lighting has moved on in leaps and bounds over the past few years. With the new styles of lightbulb being brought in, it’s time to look at your light fittings and consider whether they need updating. Even the simple addition of a few new lampshades for a more contemporary style will make a huge difference to the feel of the room.
6. Outside space
If you are lucky enough to have some outside space, make the most of it! Having an outdoor living area is a big draw for buyers, so invest in some patio furniture and tidy up your planting. Spring is an ideal time for reseeding your lawn, which you can do very cheaply – this is one home improvement that you will definitely benefit from, as long as the British weather will let you.
7. Bathroom suite
As long as your plumbing is sound, having a replacement bathroom suite installed isn’t a tricky job. Go for clean, simple shapes and lines, and team with accent colours in your towels and accessories.
8. Kitchen cupboards
The kitchen is generally the busiest room in the house and gets the toughest treatment! There’s no denying that a new kitchen is a serious investment, but if you are happy with the layout and the function of your kitchen then you could look at simply replacing the doors and drawers.
Whatever home improvements you decide on, make sure they will give you and your home the maximum return on your investment.
