An Eileen Derbyshire retirement update has come from her son Oliver, who confirmed on X that the Coronation Street legend is now living in a home for retired actors and actresses and is approaching her 95th birthday.
Derbyshire played Emily Bishop on the long-running soap, first appearing in 1961 and remaining a fixture of the show for decades before leaving in 2016. Emily’s most recent on-screen moment came seven years ago, in a video call from Peru in which she wished Ken Barlow a happy birthday.

The update came about somewhat unexpectedly. Oliver had taken to X to let fans know he had found old Coronation Street scripts while clearing out his mother’s cottage, and offered to post a page or two to anyone who wanted a memento. ‘When I cleared out my mum’s cottage, I found a lot of old Coronation St scripts,’ he wrote. ‘They’re nothing fancy but if anyone would like a page or two for a memento, I’d be happy to mail a few out. No charge, obviously. I’ll follow back to the first five replies and you can DM an address.’
When a fan asked after Derbyshire herself, Oliver’s reply was both reassuring and touching. ‘She’s still going,’ he wrote. ‘She’s about to turn 95. She’s in a home for retired actors and actresses now.’
The warmth in that exchange quickly spread across the thread. Soaps queen Sharon Marshall stepped in, asking Oliver whether he might come across any photographs that could be shared at future Corrie events. ‘The cast all spoke SO warmly about your Mum on the Audience With,’ Marshall wrote, citing Bill Roache and Amanda Barrie by name.
Oliver’s reply was characteristically generous. ‘That’s very kind of you, Sharon,’ he wrote. ‘She always spoke very highly of all her colleagues, too. She misses them.’ It is a small exchange, but it says a good deal about the affection that surrounds a woman who spent more than five decades as part of the ITV family.
Emily Bishop lives on in Weatherfield, even from a distance
While Derbyshire herself has been absent from screens since that Peru video call, the show has kept Emily present in spirit. Earlier this year, an on-screen exchange between Rita Tanner and Brian Packham revealed that Emily had been sending ‘spiritual pictures’ to Rita each day. Brian quipped that Rita could respond with a ‘disappointing affirmation’, which Rita firmly rejected: ‘I can’t send that to her! She’s my friend.’ She did, however, consider passing one along to Jenny Connor, reasoning that Jenny ‘has a good sense of humour.’
It is exactly the kind of gentle, affectionate nod that keeps a long-serving character connected to Weatherfield without requiring the actor to return, and it tells you something about how fondly the production regards Derbyshire that Emily is still being written into conversations at all.
