Kit Green’s cancer secret is pushing him to breaking point in Coronation Street next week, as the detective turns to drink, picks up a stranger and comes to blows at work, all while the people closest to him remain completely in the dark.
The storyline has been building since Kit was diagnosed with breast cancer, a secret he has shared with only one person: Todd Grimshaw. Everyone else, including his family, is left to make sense of increasingly erratic behaviour without any of the context that would explain it.
Bethany uses Kit Green’s cancer secret to manage her own guilt
The situation is made more fraught by the recent one-night stand between Kit and Bethany Platt, which both parties are desperate to pretend never happened. Lucy Fallon, who plays Bethany, explains the dynamic with characteristic candour.
‘Bethany and Kit both think sleeping together was a really big mistake,’ Fallon says. ‘They’ve been through a lot since Sarah went to prison, and have had to pick up the slack with looking after Harry. Kit is spiralling and acting suspiciously, but Bethany just puts it down to everything that’s happened, she has no idea he’s got cancer.’
Living in the same flat has made the awkwardness impossible to avoid. When Kit brings a woman back one evening, Bethany walks in on the pair and is far from pleased, but she quickly sees a use for it. If Kit is visibly moving on, she can use that information to nudge her mother in the same direction.
‘Bethany visits Sarah in prison and tells her that Kit is dating again,’ Fallon explains. ‘The ideal situation for Bethany is for her mum to forget about Kit and focus on herself and getting out of prison. Because if Sarah does get out and ends up back with Kit, that will make it worse for Bethany. If Sarah knows Kit is seeing other women, she might move on herself, so Bethany doesn’t ever have to face the fact she’s actually slept with him!’
Bernie’s gene test puts the Kit Green cancer secret under more pressure
Kit arrived in Weatherfield in 2024 after Bernie Winter went searching for her long-lost son, according to Manchester Evening News, and the mother-son bond they have been building makes his silence all the more loaded. The pressure tightens further next week when the family gathers for a meal and Bernie raises her upcoming test to determine whether she has inherited the cancer gene from her late mother’s side.
The Radio Times has reported that the family first became aware they may carry a familial BRCA gene following the death of Kit’s estranged aunt Celeste. Bernie sitting at the table and openly discussing that genetic risk, while Kit sits opposite her already knowing he has the disease, is exactly the kind of scene the storyline has been steering towards.
Whether Kit can hold his composure through that conversation is another matter. His week is already unravelling before the family meal even arrives.
At work, Kit loses his temper when colleague Lisa Connor-Swain pushes him for an update on a case he is trying to crack. He snaps at her, and she takes her concerns to Bernie. Later, after getting into a brawl with a suspect, Kit turns up to the meal with a black eye, which will hardly make the evening easier to navigate.
The combination of the alcohol, the confrontation at work and the black eye is precisely the kind of visible deterioration that tends to precede a Coronation Street revelation, and with Bernie’s gene-test conversation now on the table, Kit is running out of ways to deflect.
ITV has confirmed that Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1, with episodes also available to stream on ITVX.
