Ryan Connor Bethany romance teased as Corrie fans spot the chemistry

Ryan Connor Bethany romance

Coronation Street viewers are buzzing over a possible Ryan Connor Bethany romance after the pair shared a charged exchange in Thursday’s episode, and fans on X have made their feelings very clear.

The 3 September instalment saw Ryan cross paths with Bethany Platt, who was in the middle of sorting out her own love life as she prepared for a date with Roman. Their conversation was brief, but the chemistry between them was hard to miss, and it didn’t take long for viewers to start reading between the lines.

Fans call for Ryan Connor Bethany romance to become official

The reaction on X was swift and largely enthusiastic. ‘Looks like Corrie are going to revisit Ryan and Bethany’s obvious attraction, I’m all for it,’ wrote one viewer. Another added: ‘Definitely here for this. Bethany deserves a good guy and Ryan is definitely that.’

Several fans pointed out that the two characters are not exactly strangers. ‘Did anyone else see chemistry between Ryan and Bethany? Would they make a good couple, despite having already slept together in 2019?’ one viewer asked. It is a fair point: whatever happened before did not exactly stick, but the question of whether the timing is better now is one the show appears to be deliberately raising.

‘Are they teasing a Ryan and Bethany romance? Or did I just read too much into that interaction?’ another fan wondered. ‘Well, if you did, then so did I,’ came the reply. ‘Definitely a spark in the hair salon.’

Others picked up on something beyond the dialogue. ‘What is going on here? I didn’t love Bethany and Ryan together before but maybe now would work? Definitely feels like they’re setting up for him to date someone soon. His outfits are so different now,’ one viewer observed. A further fan was even more enthusiastic: ‘Loving Ryan’s hair and his new style! He looks so cool, also please let him and Bethany get together again. They are good together. Plus imagine the family scenes between the Platts and The Connor-Swains, it would be gold!’

Ryan has had a quiet run, and Lucy Fallon hints at trouble ahead for Bethany

It has been a relatively low-key period for Ryan on the cobbles. Ever since Jodie Ramsey used him, the character has largely been operating in the background. More screen time (particularly if it comes with a new relationship) would be a welcome change for fans who feel he has been underserved by recent storylines.

Whether a Ryan Connor Bethany romance actually materialises is another question, because Bethany’s own path may be about to get complicated. Actor Lucy Fallon, who plays Bethany, has been candid about what is coming for her character. ‘She does have a big storyline coming up. I can’t tell you what it is, but it’s not going to be great. I don’t think people are going to be happy about it,’ Fallon told press. ‘This one is low-key her fault. Everyone is going to be like, “She is a dick.”‘

That is not exactly the profile of someone about to ride off into a smooth, uncomplicated romance. If Bethany is set to court audience frustration, any relationship she steps into (with Ryan or anyone else) is likely to get messy.

For now, nothing has been confirmed. But when fans are already writing the wedding guest list (‘imagine the Platts and the Connor-Swains’) from a single hair-salon conversation, the show’s writers will know the appetite is there. Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1, with episodes also available to stream on ITVX.
