Oscar Curtis, who plays Lucas Hay in Hollyoaks, has told fans that answers are on the way after weeks of mysterious behaviour from his character, including a tense confrontation with Gemma Johnson that left viewers with plenty of questions. Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Curtis teased that scenes yet to air will shed light on what Lucas has really been up to.
The storyline has centred on Lucas’s involvement in the disappearance of his father Ste, which came to light during his showdown with Gemma. Fans were also left curious by Lucas’s more recent scenes with Imran Maalik, which hinted that further twists are still to come.
Oscar Curtis on playing Lucas’s darker side
Curtis was candid about how much he enjoys the character’s more complex moments. ‘I enjoy the darker side, to be honest!’ he told Digital Spy. ‘The thing is, it’s quite far removed from myself, so it’s fun to play those emotions. And also, I think when a character’s just the same thing all the time, it gets a bit boring for the viewers but also for the actors.’
On whether Lucas was being entirely genuine in his confrontation with Gemma, Curtis was deliberately elliptical. ‘I think when more episodes come out and other sides of the story get revealed, I think people will say: “Okay, that makes more sense now”. Because it kind of did come out of nowhere!’ he said.
He also reflected on the Gemma scenes themselves. ‘It was a bit of a turn in the story for Lucas, because he’s just come out of prison,’ he said. ‘But it’s fun to play and doing the scenes in the Maalik set with Tisha [Merry, who plays Gemma], they were fun to film. It’s a different side of Lucas, so it’s always great to expand the character a little bit.’
The family reunion fans are waiting for
Ste went missing several weeks before the source article was published and has not shared any scenes with Lucas since the youngster was released from prison, meaning fans have yet to see Ste, Lucas and the recast Leah Barnes together on screen.
Curtis acknowledged the fan appetite for that reunion. ‘I think the fans want a Lucas and Ste reunion. So maybe in due course that will happen!’ he said. ‘I think the fans want the full family reunion, so it’ll happen in due time, definitely!’ He added that he has already filmed a number of scenes with Charlotte Riley, who plays Leah, and Ijaz Rana, who plays Imran.
Hollyoaks airs three nights a week, with its Channel 4 streaming premiere at 07:00, followed by an E4 broadcast the same evening at 19:00. Channel 4 also makes complete episodes available on YouTube, with each one going up a week after its Channel 4 premiere.
