Sarah Platt trial verdict looms in tense Coronation Street scenes

Coronation Street is building to a dramatic conclusion as the Sarah Platt trial reaches its verdict, with the beloved character facing the prospect of a life sentence for the murder of Theo Silverton. A first-look clip from the 19 October episode, reported by Digital Spy, shows a visibly anxious Sarah as she awaits the jury’s decision.

The clip finds Sarah lying in bed, the prosecution barrister’s words echoing in her mind. She was branded a ‘cold-blooded murderer’ in court, but before she can dwell on it too long, she is told the jury has reached a verdict.

Sarah has ‘resigned herself to a life behind bars’

An insider for the ITV soap painted a bleak picture of where Sarah’s head is at. ‘Sarah’s resigned herself to a life behind bars,’ they said. ‘She’s already said goodbye to her old life and put plans in place for her son, Harry.’

The source went on to say that ‘all her optimism is shattered and now she’s prepared for the worst, a miserable existence locked up for life.’ Meanwhile, close friend Todd Grimshaw, who was himself in an abusive relationship with the late Theo, is in a similarly desperate state. ‘Todd can’t bear the idea of Sarah being found guilty,’ the insider added. ‘Theo’s abuse took so much from him, and now he might lose his best friend because of that evil man. Todd might’ve felt conflicted at the start, but locking Sarah away doesn’t feel like justice.’

The actor who played Theo is rooting for Sarah

One notable voice in Sarah’s corner belongs to James Cartwright, who departed the soap in June after portraying the villainous Theo. Speaking to Digital Spy at the Inside Soap Awards, Cartwright was unambiguous about where his sympathies lie.

‘I really hope she gets off with it,’ he said. ‘To the jury – let her off! He [Theo] was an absolute stinker, what a horror of a man. It’s great how it ended, it’s great that he met his end. And absolutely – free Sarah Platt! And also let’s not get Gary [Windass] involved in this – I mean, he disposed of a bit, but he did it for love!’

Whether Sarah walks free or faces conviction remains to be seen. New episodes go out on ITV1 each weeknight at 8.30pm and are also available to watch on ITVX.
