Lucy Fallon has promised that the Sarah Platt murder trial will bring some of the most dramatic scenes Coronation Street has produced in years, teasing that what’s coming is ‘sneaky’, ‘dramatic’ and, above all, ‘devastating’.
Sarah faces a potentially lengthy prison sentence for the murder of Theo Silverton, with the fateful courtroom scenes having already been filmed. Whether she walks free or not, Fallon is keeping her cards firmly close to her chest.
‘It’s dramatic. It’s quite sneaky. And I would say devastating, also. If Sarah is out or not, I cannot possibly reveal,’ the actor said.
The one-night stand that could change everything before the Sarah Platt murder trial
Before the trial even gets under way, the storylines building around it are already piling up. Kit has been trying to reduce Sarah’s sentence by proving that Gary Windass was involved in Silverton’s death. But his personal life has taken a chaotic turn: he recently had a one-night stand with Bethany Platt, who, as Radio Times notes, is the daughter of his ex-girlfriend Sarah Platt. Sarah is played by Tina O’Brien.
The fling has left Bethany reeling with guilt. Following his cancer diagnosis, Kit has been throwing himself into drinking and short-lived encounters, and Bethany’s situation has become entangled in her own attempts to influence what happens next for her mother.
‘I think [the one-night stand] was definitely a big fat mistake, she’s feeling incredibly guilty. That’s going to continue for quite a while,’ Fallon said.
Bethany’s concern for Sarah is not entirely selfless, either. Fallon explained that her character has noticed something is off with how Sarah is coping. ‘Bethany thinks Sarah is handling things a bit too well and it’s a bit weird, she’s acting strange. She’s worried about her,’ the actor said, before adding that clearing her own conscience is also part of the picture.
The plan, the guilt and the ‘sneakiness’ to come
The ideal outcome for Bethany, as Fallon laid it out, is straightforward enough: she wants Sarah to cut ties with Kit altogether. ‘The ideal situation for Bethany is for her mum to sack Kit off, “I’m over it and concentrate on myself and forget about him because I’ve got bigger things going on,”‘ Fallon said.
The reasoning is practical as much as emotional. If Sarah is acquitted in the Sarah Platt murder trial and finds her way back to Kit, the situation for Bethany becomes far more complicated. ‘If she does get out and Sarah ends up back with Kit, that’s going to make things even worse for Bethany and Kit’s situation,’ Fallon said.
It is that web of guilt, loyalty and self-interest that Fallon seems to be pointing to when she uses the word ‘sneaky’. Bethany’s plan to nudge her mother away from Kit is driven by genuine worry, but it is also driven by the need to protect herself from the fallout of her own choices.
Whether the plan holds together or unravels before the Sarah Platt murder trial reaches its conclusion is, for now, exactly the kind of question Fallon is refusing to answer. What she has confirmed is that the courtroom scenes, already in the can, will not disappoint anyone bracing for drama.
Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITVX and ITV1.
