How to make New Year’s fitness resolutions that you’ll actually stick to

Jumping on the fitness bandwagon might be a tired cliché when it comes to New Year’s resolutions, but it’s something that you can certainly stick to if you’re serious about putting in the time and effort. If you’re already struggling to keep up with your goals, try some of these hacks, and we’re certain that you’ll be back on track in no time at all.

Be realistic about your goals

While it’s true that you want to set goals, it’s still important to be realistic about what you want to achieve. It’s important to understand how breaking a big goal into much smaller and therefore more manageable goals will give you more chance of success. For example, as a fitness beginner, pushing yourself to exercise 6 days a week can be overzealous and cause you to fall off the wagon sooner than you wished. Instead, ease yourself into exercise gradually, and it’s a lot more likely that you’ll grow to enjoy it rather than to see it as a chore.

Get a workout buddy

Research has shown that having someone to exercise with makes us a lot more motivated and even increases the likelihood of reaching our fitness goal by 95%! This is because you have someone that will provide you with a certain level of support. Whether this is a friend or a personal trainer, it doesn’t matter, as long as you choose someone who won’t accept your excuses when you don’t want to train.

Measure your progress

Rather than hitting the scale, measure your progress by taking regular photos of yourself, so you have visual evidence of your fitness improvements. When you first start hitting the gym, it’s not unusual for you to gain a little weight as you gain more muscle so tracking your progress via how much you weigh can be detrimental to your motivation.

Choose something to work toward

As well as setting up mini goals each month, it’s a good idea to have something bigger to work toward. Choose something that has a competitive element such as a 5k run that will reinforce your desire to achieve something. Make sure you’ve chosen something that has a specific date, so you know exactly how much training you need to do.

Challenge yourself with something new

Once you’ve managed to settle into a regular workout, it’s a good idea to challenge yourself to something new. If your gym has fitness classes, why not try something like yoga or pilates or look elsewhere to try Prestige Boot Camp training or, if you’re feeling brave, you could challenge yourself outdoors with an activity like rock climbing.

Don’t be afraid to reward yourself

Arguably, one of the most important parts of successful training is knowing when to reward yourself when you’ve reached your goals. To compliment your hard work, treat yourself by buying something new or doing something that you enjoy. Remember though, an all-out food and drink binge for two weeks of hard work isn’t always the best way to go. Check out some non-food rewards instead.
