Sustainability A Main Trend At The Oscars

Sustainability

One thing that stuck out most at this year’s awards season was that sustainability was most certainly a main theme on the red carpet. The Oscars were no exception. Here are some celebrities that dazzled dressed in conscious fashion:

Joaquin Phoenix

Some say he set the bar for the season as he swore to wear the same tuxedo by Stella McCartney (long time advocate of ethical fashion) throughout the whole awards show. In fact, avid re-wearer of clothing, Kate Middleton, wore the same Alexander McQueen number that she had worn in 2012.

Kaitlyn Dever

She collaborated with Red Carpet Green Dress and wore a Louis Vuitton dress made from ethically sourced, sustainable fabrics.

Léa Seydoux

She was seen donning a white gown composed of certified silk and a brand new wood fiber material created by an eco-couture brand, Tencel Luxe. It will reportedly be available on the market this year May.

Margot Robbie

Dressed in a vintage haute couture dress from 1994, Margot Robbie was up for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. This was for her role in the film, Bombshell.

Penelope Cruz

Also dressed in Chanel, Cruz wore a vintage dress from 1995 while presenting 2020’s Best International Feature Film award.

Olivia Collman

Dressed by Stella McCartney, this look included a cape composed of sustainable viscose.

Timothée Chalamet

This look set off a meme culture across the internet in a Prada jacket and matching trousers. The garments were made from Prada’s Re-Nylon range, which makes use of regenerated nylon fabric.

Saoirse Ronan

She wore possibly the most interesting take on sustainability – Saoirse Ronan’s Gucci gown was made of black fabric upcycled from her BAFTAs dress.

Elizabeth Banks

Making a bold statement, Banks wore the very same Badgley Mischka dress that she wore to the same event in 2004.

Awards shows are the perfect platform for celebrities to advocate for sustainability when it comes to the following season’s fashion trends. With a world filled with fast fashion, it is crucial to reduce the harm the industry places on the environment. Consumerism is one to address this and considering the huge following Hollywood has, awards shows are the ideal way to introduce these topics through a visual platform and show that sustainable fashion is the way forwards. This season has set the bar for the rest of 2020, with sustainability being at the forefront of fashion in terms of premiered, events and upcoming major red carpet appearances.

With an increase in the demand for sustainable fashion, this will surely translate into the consumer market as brands see higher end designers using ethical materials, and decide to follow suit. In the upcoming seasons, there is a hope (and need) for less fast fashion and a focus on long-lasting, classic pieces that will last you through a number of seasons. Look for garments you can wear in various different ways and incorporate into a number of looks.
