Timothée Chalamet was draped in a sparkling Louis Vuitton hoodie, encrusted with 3,000 Swarovski crystals and 15,000 sequins, for the London premiere of The King. This resulted in 192% increase in online searches for men’s hoodies!

This, in fact, was not an isolated incident as numerous of his public appearances have resulted in a spike in searches for particular items of clothing. At the premier of the Henry V biopic at the Venice Film Festival, Chalamet wore a taupe satin suit by Haider Ackermann, which sparked an 806% increase in visits to stockists of the brand. Not to mention the actor’s appearance at the Golden Globes 2019 in a Virgil Abloh Louis Vuitton harness. These figures, as well as the response from consumers, shows the power of an individual when it comes to making fashion statements in the industry – mass consumers will always follow suit, resulting in a high demand for accessible current trends.

However, as an influencer, there is also a responsibility to deliver positive messages to your fan base and consumers, such as that of environmental sustainability in the fashion industry, especially considering the amount of waste and pollution as a result of fast fashion and mass consumerism. Therefore, it is wonderful to know that Chalamet is using his platform to create discourse about the importance of sustainability.

As an example, take a look at his 2020 Oscars look – a Prada Re-Nylon suit made from Econyl, which is an eco-friendly fabric that will be available on the public market in the not-so-distant future. Chalamet wore a zip-front jacket and a vintage Cartier Tradition brooch dating back to the year 1955. This served as a reminder than quality, artfully crafted pieces hold their value and can in fact, be improved with age. As wise Coco Chanel said, “Fashion passes, style remains.”

Chalamet joins the likes of many other celebs in this journey to sustainability, such as Joaquin Phoenix. Phoenix wore the exact same Stella McCartney tuxedo for the whole awards season in order to advocate for reducing waste and re-wearing quality garments, breaking the stigma that it is not ok to be seen in the same outfit twice. In fact, many others are following suit with this idea, such as Elizabeth Banks, who wore the same dress to the Oscars afterparty this year as she did in 2004! In fact, many other influencers should hop on this bandwagon and advocating for re-wearing clothing in an effort to decrease the amount of fast fashion produced. Of course, fashion is constantly changing but that doesn’t mean you can’t wear your clothing on more than one occasion if you invest in the right pieces that complement your daily wardrobe and personal style.

Chalamet has been spotted wearing a number of other conscious clothing items, such as a black velvet bomber jacket from Stella McCartney’s capsule collection, All Together, paired with a band t-shirt from 2001. He is also known for wearing Exlypse trainers and vegan Stan Smith sneakers, and his loungewear attire features pieces from McCartney’s eco-friendly collection, which uses ethical alternatives to mass-produced materials.
