Gary Lineker Prime Video docuseries confirmed for 2027 release

Gary Lineker Prime Video docuseries

A Gary Lineker Prime Video docuseries is on its way, with the four-part series set to chart the life of one of Britain’s most recognisable figures from his childhood in Leicester through to his 26-year tenure as host of Match of the Day. Filming is already under way, and the series is expected to arrive on the platform in 2027, though an exact release date is yet to be confirmed.

What the Gary Lineker Prime Video docuseries will cover

Currently operating under the working title Lineker, the series promises a blend of nostalgic archive material and unseen personal footage, with Lineker himself offering what the producers describe as ‘candid insights and honest reflections’. The aim, according to the logline, is to ‘delve into the truth behind the headlines’ of a career that has spanned football, broadcasting and politics.

The series will also feature ‘intimate’ interviews with family, friends, fellow footballers and critics, building a portrait of ‘one of England’s original international football icons’. The logline frames Lineker as having moved from ‘Mr Nice Guy on the pitch to an outspoken figure off it, sparking national debate and dividing opinion in the process.’

Orchard Studios is producing the documentary. According to The Athletic, the production company was founded in 2024. Nat Lippiett and Dan Grabiner are serving as executive producers. In a statement, Lippiett said Lineker had been at ‘the centre of national conversation’ for ‘decades’, while Grabiner added that the series would ‘reveal the many sides of one of Britain’s most recognisable and divisive figures, with candid insight from Gary himself and those closest to both his triumphs and controversies.’

The football career behind the headlines

The docuseries has plenty of ground to cover. According to The Athletic, Lineker is fourth in England’s all-time record goalscoring list and won the Golden Boot at the 1986 World Cup. Radio Times notes that he became top goalscorer at Leicester City, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur across his club career, a domestic record that adds considerable weight to the 80 caps he earned for England.

Away from the pitch, Lineker has built a media presence that stretches well beyond MOTD. He co-founded Goalhanger, a UK media company, with Tony Pastor, according to Deadline. Goalhanger is the company behind The Rest Is Football podcast, which has since been adapted for television.

What Lineker has been doing since leaving MOTD

Since his final episode of Match of the Day in May 2025, Lineker has remained firmly in the public eye. He starred in the television adaptation of The Rest Is Football earlier this year, with Netflix producing the series to coincide with the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The show sees Lineker appear alongside Alan Shearer and Micah Richards.

Netflix has picked up the series for a further two years, with the deal running through to the 2028 UEFA European Championships, which will be hosted in the UK and Ireland. It is a significant extension that keeps Lineker central to football broadcasting even as his BBC chapter closes.

The Prime Video docuseries sits alongside that commitment as Lineker steps into a new phase of his public life, one in which he appears content to let cameras document it in full. With filming already in progress and a 2027 window on the horizon, the project looks set to be one of the more substantial sports documentaries of that year.
