Hollyoaks Xander casting news: Indigo Kamal-Poole joins as Cindy and Beth clash

Hollyoaks Xander casting news

The Hollyoaks Xander casting news is here: Hollyoaks has cast Indigo Kamal-Poole in the role of new arrival Xander, with the character’s first scenes set to air on Wednesday 26 August on E4 and Channel 4 Streaming.

The announcement was first revealed by Digital Spy, which confirmed that Xander will make his entrance in the village later this month, immediately catching the attention of some familiar faces.

Who is Xander, and how does the Hollyoaks Xander casting news shape up?

Show chiefs have kept much of Xander’s backstory deliberately under wraps, but they have teased that he has a connection to one of the existing residents. His very first scene places him squarely in the middle of an already tense dynamic, as he finds himself on the receiving end of questioning from a bickering Cindy Cunningham and Beth Keane.

For those keeping up with recent storylines, that tension will come as no surprise. The two women have been at odds for weeks over a significant secret surrounding how Beth’s son Maddox came into the world, and what the future holds for everyone involved. A Hollyoaks insider suggests, though, that Xander’s arrival could shift things unexpectedly: ‘Xander’s arrival could spark a miracle if he inadvertently gets Cindy and Beth on the same page. The two women have been at odds for weeks amid the big secret about how Beth’s son Maddox came into the world, but on this particular mission, they could be a formidable force as a duo!’

So while Xander walks into what sounds like a fairly unwelcoming welcome committee, he may end up doing the village a quiet favour.

Indigo Kamal-Poole on representation and hearing aids on screen

Kamal-Poole is a hard-of-hearing actor, and has spoken warmly about the way Hollyoaks has handled that aspect of both the actor’s identity and the character’s. ‘It’s been really exciting exploring a character like Xander, and to be able to wear my hearing aids on screen without them being the driving force behind who he is,’ Kamal-Poole said. ‘My hearing loss is a part of me, just as it’s a part of Xander, but it doesn’t have to define the stories we’re able to tell. I think there’s something really important about that kind of representation, where a character can exist with a disability, while their relationships and personality drive their story.’

It is the kind of casting decision that tends to resonate beyond the show itself. Putting a hearing aid on screen without making it the entire plot point is a quietly different approach, and Kamal-Poole’s comments suggest it was a conscious one from the production side as well as the performer’s.

The actor also noted the thrill of working alongside some of the soap’s longer-running characters from the off. ‘It’s been such a privilege to work with iconic characters such as Cindy and Warren already. I’m so excited for everyone to see how his storyline unfolds,’ Kamal-Poole added.

The mention of Warren alongside Cindy hints that Xander’s world will extend well beyond that opening scene, even if the precise nature of his connection to the village is still being kept quiet ahead of transmission.

Hollyoaks airs Mondays to Wednesdays, with each episode streaming on Channel 4 from 7am before its E4 broadcast the same evening at 7pm. Full episodes are also available on YouTube a week after their Channel 4 release, with selected omnibus editions on Prime Video. Xander’s debut lands on 26 August.
