Shane Richie divorce arrest: EastEnders actor parts from wife of 19 years

Shane Richie divorce arrest

The Shane Richie divorce arrest double-header has landed in the same news cycle: the EastEnders actor has finalised his split from wife Christie Goddard after 19 years of marriage, with the divorce confirmed just days before he was charged with drink-driving in Harlow last month.

Richie and Goddard met in a pub in 2001, became engaged four years later, and married in 2007 after six years together. The couple have three children. The divorce was finalised last month, according to BBC News, which also places Richie’s home as Tadworth, Surrey.

The arrest: Shane Richie charged at Harlow petrol station

Officers from Essex Police were called to reports of a suspected drink-driver in Church Langley Way, Harlow, shortly before 11.20pm on Wednesday 29 July. On arrival, they arrested a man. A charge of drink-driving was subsequently authorised against Shane Roche (Richie’s legal name) aged 62, of Surrey. He is due to appear at Colchester magistrates’ court on Wednesday 9 September.

The circumstances around the arrest added an extra layer of colour to the story. According to Yahoo Entertainment, the incident took place on the forecourt of a Tesco petrol station, where Richie is said to have been instructed not to smoke an e-cigarette due to a safety risk. That exchange reportedly preceded the police call-out.

The Shane Richie divorce arrest story has understandably drawn attention given how close the two events sit together on the timeline. For now, neither Richie nor a representative has commented publicly.

Alfie Moon and two decades on the Square

Away from the headlines, Richie’s role as Alfie Moon on the BBC soap remains one of the more enduring presences in EastEnders. He first brought the character to Albert Square in 2002, before making his first departure three years later. He returned in 2010 for a six-year stint, then exited again before making sporadic appearances across 2018 and 2019. A full-time return followed three years later, and he remains in the cast today, though Alfie has occasionally been off-screen for extended periods.

One of those absences was written into the show’s mythology: Alfie went looking for Zoe Slater, the estranged daughter of his wife Kat. After a dramatic storyline, Zoe returned to Walford following two decades away and has, by all accounts, ruffled plenty of feathers since. That chapter of the show is drawing to a close, however. It was reported last month that Michelle Ryan would be leaving the soap later this year, with Zoe rumoured to be killed off. How the storyline resolves, and how central Alfie’s role will be in its conclusion, remains to be seen on screen.

Richie has also appeared on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! during his time away from Walford, keeping his profile firmly in the public eye between soap stints.

EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. Episodes are also available on BBC iPlayer, where most drop early at 6am ahead of their television broadcast. Richie’s next confirmed public appearance is at Colchester magistrates’ court on 9 September.
