Debbie Webster birthday scenes are coming to ITV‘s Coronation Street next week, and they promise to be among the most emotional the soap has aired in some time, as the hotelier faces the possibility that this could be her last birthday she truly remembers.
Sue Devaney, who plays Debbie Webster, has been at the centre of one of the Street’s most affecting storylines in recent memory. According to the Manchester Evening News, Devaney takes on the role with the full weight of a dementia diagnosis that, as Female First reports, was first given to her character in April 2025. Since then, Weatherfield has been watching Debbie navigate a condition that changes a little more each week.
A birthday party full of love and a room full of dread
Next week, Debbie gathers her friends and family in the Rovers Return for a birthday party that her husband Ronnie has mixed feelings about. Ronnie’s concern is understandable: Debbie has been deteriorating, and he worries a big occasion might prove too much for her. But everyone rallies round, filling the colourfully decorated pub with exactly the kind of warmth and laughter Debbie deserves.
And then Debbie steps up to the microphone.
In what looks set to be one of the standout moments of the week, she thanks the room for coming and makes clear how much their continued support means to her. The speech takes a particularly tender turn when she turns her attention to Ronnie, her eyes filling with tears. She tells him he is the love of her life and thanks him for everything he has done for her, even as she acknowledges that harder days are still to come.
A Weatherfield source close to the storyline puts it plainly: ‘Debbie wants to cherish every milestone. She doesn’t know how long she has left, or how much she’ll be able to remember. Treasuring every moment with her loved ones is her priority.’

The question the show leaves hanging is whether the night will pass without incident, or whether it will only confirm what Ronnie and the rest of the family fear: that the deterioration is moving faster than any of them had hoped.
Vinta Morgan on what comes next
Vinta Morgan, who plays Ronnie, has spoken candidly about where this storyline is heading. ‘Dementia in itself is something that can take many forms,’ he told us. ‘It can escalate, it can stay dormant for long periods, and then it can rapidly decline into an area that you would not have expected.’
Morgan was clear that the story is still very much in its early stages, in terms of what it will ask of the people around Debbie as much as Debbie herself. ‘In terms of the pacing and where Debbie is at, it’s a beginning of a new reality for her,’ he said. ‘Not only for her, but everyone around her who’s grappling with this new Debbie, this new version.’
He also gave a sense of how the show intends to portray the condition’s day-to-day reality going forward. ‘As we get into this new pocket of Debbie’s behaviour and explore how she goes about her day-to-day life, we’re going to see more moments where the dementia is starting to take control,’ Morgan continued. ‘Debbie’s having to consciously deal with that, and other people are realising that this isn’t as easy as they may have thought it would be.’
