The Jodie Shona fire risk reaches a new level of danger in tonight’s ITV Coronation Street, as Jodie secretly places a burnt cake back in a switched-off oven to fill the Platt kitchen with smoke, all while baby Harper sleeps upstairs and Shona naps on the sofa. Monday’s episode, dated 14 September, is already available to stream on ITVX ahead of its 8.30pm broadcast on ITV1.
Jodie turns up the heat in the Platt house
It has been a gruelling stretch for Shona, who has been juggling the demands of caring for baby Harper alongside her other household responsibilities. On top of that, she is expected to bake a cake for Lily’s upcoming school sale, with Jodie claiming to be too busy to lend a hand. Overwhelmed and alone, Shona accidentally burns the cake, then slips away for a nap to catch her breath.
That is when Jodie makes her move. She sneaks back into the Platt house and places the charred cake straight back into the oven, with the clear intention of causing chaos. David and Doug return to find the kitchen thick with smoke, Shona still asleep on the sofa, and Harper upstairs. The scene is as alarming as Jodie intended it to be.
According to Radio Times, Shona is played by Julia Goulding, and the Jodie Shona fire risk storyline has been building as part of a sustained campaign by Jodie to make everyone around Shona doubt her. Tonight, that campaign pays off in the cruellest way: although Shona insists she turned the oven off before she fell asleep, she quickly begins to question her own memory, openly expressing fears about her own sanity. Jodie, watching from the wings, is delighted.
Bethany, Kit and a moment of uncomfortable honesty
Elsewhere in tonight’s episode, the tension between Bethany and Kit refuses to settle. Kit brings a woman back to the flat but pulls back before anything happens, telling her he is not in the right headspace for a one-night stand. Bethany walks in on the pair and challenges Kit over what she calls self-destructive behaviour. Given what passed between them last week, though, the show leaves open whether it is genuine concern or her own guilt doing the talking.
Ross makes Tyrone a laughing stock, then regrets it
Over at the Rovers, Tyrone bristles when Ross bad-mouths Kevin. Ross, realising he has overstepped, quickly changes tack and spins an elaborate story about UFOs to distract him. The ruse works on Ross, but Tyrone cannot help repeating the tale to his mates at the pub, leaving Ross looking like a fool in front of the regulars. Ross does not let it pass. He pulls Tyrone to one side to make clear, in no uncertain terms, that he has no patience for being made a laughing stock.
A new face arrives for Summer
The episode also introduces Marco, who catches Summer’s eye at the cafĂ© when he spots one of her drawings and pays her a compliment. The encounter takes a stranger turn, however, when Marco waits for Summer’s back to be turned and walks off with the artwork. Summer later discovers the drawing on display in the window of the tattoo shop, which is far from the reaction she was expecting from a stranger admiring her work.
Show bosses have teased the possibility of a romance developing between Summer and Marco. That is all the Jodie Shona fire risk storyline has for company tonight: five stories, each with enough loose threads to carry into the week ahead. Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
