A Spider-Man: Brand New Day sequel is not on the horizon anytime soon, according to Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman and CEO Ravi Ahuja, even as the film continues to rewrite box-office history. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, per the Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki, the film has taken $2.41 billion at the global box office, making it the biggest film of the year, the third highest-grossing movie of all time, and the biggest Spider-Man film ever made.
Sony says a Spider-Man Brand New Day sequel is still ‘a couple of years’ away
Speaking at the BofA Securities 2026 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference, Ahuja was candid about the timeline. ‘We don’t have a date for it yet,’ he said, as reported by Variety. ‘A couple years usually, but there’s a Spider-Verse movie coming next year.’ A sequel has yet to be officially confirmed by Sony Pictures, though Ahuja’s comments make clear the studio is at least thinking about what comes next.
Ahuja was visibly delighted by how Brand New Day performed, calling the box office ‘a tremendous result’ and admitting the scale of it caught even the studio off guard. ‘We obviously hadn’t forecast that,’ he said. ‘We thought it would do incredibly well, but we didn’t know it would do that well.’ He also pointed to what set the film apart creatively, saying ‘really everybody came together to create a great thing’ and describing it as ‘very emotional… so a little bit different from what some of the more recent superhero movies have been’.
Released in the United States on 31 July 2026, according to the Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki, the film had the kind of global rollout that leaves studios scrambling for superlatives. Its $2.41 billion haul puts it in rarefied company, and the question of where the franchise goes from here is one the industry is already asking loudly.
Tom Holland’s future and what the key players have said
The question of whether Tom Holland will return for a fifth solo outing has been circling for a while. Last month, Sony boss Tom Rothman told Variety: ‘The honest truth is we don’t know at this point [about Holland’s future]. This has been the focus of our studio for almost two years. I can tell you this: I certainly, certainly hope. I heard Tom say at some point that he wanted to continue, and we would love it if he did.’
Marvel’s Kevin Feige struck a similarly warm but unhurried tone when speaking to Variety. ‘There are always plans,’ he said. ‘But right now, he’s going to rest after that global tour. He and Zendaya are going to take a good and restful victory lap, which they very much deserve.’
One element that kept audiences buzzing throughout Brand New Day’s release was Sadie Sink’s involvement. Her role in the film was kept a mystery ahead of release, according to Variety, adding an extra layer of intrigue to a film that was already one of the most anticipated of the year.
So while the Spider-Man: Brand New Day sequel conversation is very much alive, the studio’s position is clear: there is no date, no confirmation, and a Spider-Verse instalment arriving next year means Spidey fans will have something to watch in the meantime. Ahuja’s ‘couple of years’ timeframe is the most concrete indication yet of when a follow-up could realistically arrive.
