The Edge of Love Cast, Story and Where to Stream It Now

The Edge of Love cast

The Edge of Love cast includes Cillian Murphy, Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller and Matthew Rhys in a wartime drama that has quietly built a devoted following since its release in June 2008, and is now available to stream on Lionsgate+.

Set against the backdrop of the London Blitz, the film centres on Vera Phillips, played by Knightley, a nightclub singer who is reunited with her first love, the poet Dylan Thomas, played by Rhys. Thomas is now married to Caitlin, played by Miller, with whom he has a son. Murphy plays William Killick, Vera’s other love interest, who is called up to fight in World War II. The film traces the friendship that develops between Vera and Caitlin alongside the fraught romantic entanglements of both couples.

One detail that sets the film apart: the screenplay was written by Knightley’s mother, Sharman Macdonald, according to Wikipedia. That gives the project a personal dimension that goes well beyond the usual for-hire commission, and perhaps explains some of the emotional texture that critics, even the sceptical ones, acknowledged was present on screen.

What the Critics Made of The Edge of Love

The film was directed by John Maybury and received a mixed critical reception on release. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 39% rating based on 57 reviews, with an average score of 5.10/10. That is not a ringing endorsement, but the numbers mask a good deal of genuine enthusiasm in individual write-ups.

The Australian called it ‘an intense and strangely beautiful film’. Film-Forward.com wrote: ‘Though very uneven in style and focus… the fraught complications among the foursome raise universal issues of freewheeling young love and friendship during wartime.’ The Hollywood Reporter was warmer still, finding that the film ‘succeeds as a deeply involving study of men and women caught up in a whirlwind beyond their control’.

Audiences have been kinder over time. One IMDb viewer described it as ‘a classic war-time tale of love, loss, happiness and tragedy’, and called it ‘a perfect film for a night in’. That is more or less the verdict that has stuck.

Box Office and Legacy

Commercially, The Edge of Love was a modest performer. The film earned US$3,238,922 in gross revenue, a figure that kept it well outside blockbuster territory but did not stop it finding an audience on home viewing platforms over the years that followed. Stories about underseen films finding their footing on streaming are common enough, but this one has taken a particularly long time to land in the right place.

The full cast runs as follows: Keira Knightley as Vera Phillips, Sienna Miller as Caitlin Thomas, Cillian Murphy as William Killick, Matthew Rhys as Dylan Thomas, Lisa Stansfield as Ruth Williams, Graham McPherson as Al Bowlly, Camilla Rutherford as Nicolette, and Alastair Mackenzie as Anthony Devas.

Where to Watch The Edge of Love, and More Cillian Murphy Streaming Now

The Edge of Love is currently on Lionsgate+, which can be added as a Prime Video channel on Amazon Prime Video and comes with a seven-day free trial.

If the film sends you looking for more from Murphy, there is no shortage of options. All six series of Peaky Blinders are streaming on Netflix, along with the 2026 film Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man. Also on Netflix is 2025’s Steve, in which Murphy plays the headteacher of an all-boys school dealing with social and behavioural difficulties. The film was written by Max Porter, who also wrote the novel Grief Is the Thing with Feathers.

Over on Prime Video, 28 Days Later is available to stream. Written by Alex Garland, the post-apocalyptic horror follows Murphy’s character, a bike courier who wakes from a 28-day coma to find a virus has wiped out most of civilisation. It remains one of his most visceral early performances, and a useful reminder of quite how long he has been one of British cinema’s most compelling presences.

The Edge of Love is on Lionsgate+, available to add as a Prime Video channel, with a seven-day free trial currently on offer.
