Dolly Parton biopic legacy to be honoured, says manager: ‘She placed her personal stamp on it’

Dolly Parton biopic legacy

The Dolly Parton biopic legacy will be carried forward by her team, her long-time manager has promised, after the country icon died at the age of 80 last week with a striking range of projects already deep in development.

Danny Nozell, speaking via Deadline, said Parton had built a ‘project roadmap that will guide us for decades to come’ and that every item released through official channels will carry her direct involvement. ‘Dolly worked up until the day she died,’ he said. ‘She loved seeing her dreams come to life, and loved knowing her work brought people joy.’

What was in Dolly Parton’s project pipeline?

The list is longer than most people might expect. Beyond the biopic, Nozell confirmed that Parton had been working on a docuseries, a musical documentary, a scripted series, an ‘avatar show’, and an animated series inspired by the American outlaw Billy the Kid. September alone is set to bring a range of dolls, a new museum, a ‘Cup of Ambition’ coffee brand, and the opening of a new hotel.

‘As the leader of the team responsible for overseeing her legacy, we will ensure the many dreams she had yet to fulfil are brought to life,’ Nozell continued. ‘Many projects were in various stages of development, and we want to be transparent with her fans about this fact.’ He added that any unreleased music, products, books, experiences or campaigns launched through official Dolly Parton channels could be trusted: ‘she placed her personal stamp on it.’

Dolly Parton biopic legacy lives on in Broadway musical

The most immediate milestone in that legacy is the stage show Dolly: A True Original Musical, which is on course for Broadway. The production had its world premiere at the Belmont University Fisher Center for the Performing Arts in Nashville, Tennessee, running 18 July through 17 August 2025, with an official opening night on 8 August, according to Wikipedia. Three performers, Carrie St. Louis, Katie Rose Clarke and Quinn Titcomb, each portrayed Parton at different stages of her life during that Nashville run.

The Broadway transfer is now set to begin previews on 7 December 2026, with an official opening night scheduled for 19 January 2027, a date that would have been Parton’s 81st birthday. The creative team is a weighty one: the book is by Parton and Maria S. Schlatter, and Tony winner Bartlett Sher is in the director’s chair, according to Variety. The score draws on familiar songs from Parton’s catalogue alongside new material written for the show.

Parton had spoken about the production with characteristic directness. ‘It isn’t a story about sparkle and shine on the outside,’ she said. ‘It’s about what I really come from, what I’ve lived, what I’ve lost, what I’ve loved, and how I found my way and told it in my own words.’ She described her whole life as ‘a grand ole opera really’, and said she hoped audiences would enjoy watching ‘as much as I’ve enjoyed livin’ it’, with music present on ‘every step of the journey.’

Nozell’s promise to fans is clear: the plans Parton spent years building will not quietly disappear. More details on the full project slate are expected to follow soon, with the Broadway opening night on what would have been her 81st birthday now serving as the first unmissable date on the calendar.
