Man of Tomorrow filming wrap was confirmed by writer-director James Gunn last week, as the DC Studios co-chairman announced that principal photography on the Superman sequel had been completed, and marked the occasion with a celebratory dip in the lake.
Gunn posted two photos to his Instagram page to share the news. The first showed Nicholas Hoult, who plays Lex Luthor, jumping into the water after the final shot was taken. The second captured Gunn alongside his production team gathered around video village. ‘That’s a wrap on principal photography for Man of Tomorrow. Truly a joyful experience and I have immense gratitude to my cast and crew,’ he wrote in the caption. ‘First photo: @nicholashoult jumped in the lake after last shot. Second photo: The brain trust (except Brian) around video village during the whole shoot. They make making movies fun.’
Man of Tomorrow filming wrap: what we know about the story
The film picks up where 2025’s Superman and this year’s Supergirl left off. David Corenswet’s Man of Steel and Hoult’s Lex Luthor will continue their rivalry, with Luthor this time deciding to pull on some armour and enter the fight directly. The arrival of a larger threat in the form of Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger, will force the two adversaries to set aside their differences and work together.
Gunn has said the film will take place in ‘real time’. Given its scheduled release in 2027, that places the events of Man of Tomorrow roughly two years on from Superman. According to Deadline, the film is set to arrive in cinemas on 9 July 2027, a date that pins down a release window the production had previously left as a broad summer slot.
A packed roster of DC characters returns
Several faces from the wider DC universe are back for the sequel. Rachel Brosnahan returns as Lois Lane, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Isabela Merced and Skyler Gisondo reprise their roles as Hawkgirl and Jimmy Olsen respectively.
Deadline also reports that Nathan Fillion is back as Guy Gardner, adding further detail to a Green Lantern connection the previous film established. Alongside him, Aaron Pierre, who plays John Stewart in HBO’s Lanterns, is set to make his big-screen debut in the sequel, a crossover between the DC television and film arms that Gunn has been quietly building.
Sara Sampaio joins the cast as Eve Teschmacher, according to Deadline, a character with deep roots in Superman lore. Adria Arjona has also reportedly been cast in an undisclosed role, with rumours pointing to the character Maxima, though no confirmation has been given on that front.
Xolo Maridueña is reprising his role as Jaime Reyes, also known as Blue Beetle, with Gunn previously explaining that the actor’s version of the character would carry over into the new cinematic universe.

The Man of Tomorrow filming wrap marks a significant production milestone for DC Studios, which Gunn co-leads alongside Peter Safran. The sequel is part of a deliberate effort to build a cohesive DC Universe from the ground up, with interconnected storylines threading through film and television simultaneously.
The production has been a personal one for Gunn by his own account. His Instagram caption spoke of an ‘immense gratitude’ to cast and crew, and the tone of the wrap photos, Hoult cannonballing into a lake, the director and his team grinning beside a video village monitor, suggested a shoot that finished on a high.
With principal photography now complete, Warner Bros. will move into post-production ahead of the 9 July 2027 theatrical release.
