Ste Hay goes missing in Hollyoaks’ biggest autumn storyline yet

Ste Hay goes missing

Hollyoaks has revealed that Ste Hay goes missing under mysterious circumstances in a major new storyline that will run throughout the autumn and into early October. The plot kicks off during a spa trip with Mercedes McQueen and Leela Lomax, takes a sharp turn inside a busy shopping centre, and leaves the entire village scrambling for answers.

How Ste Hay goes missing, the full set-up

In scenes airing next week, Ste is already in a fragile place. He continues to spiral over the murder of Rex Gallagher, relapses on alcohol, and confronts James Nightingale. Mercedes, trying to help, invites Ste and Leela to a spa for a break, though she is unaware that Gemma Johnson has set the whole thing up.

In a special episode on 2 September, Ste persuades the group to stop at a shopping centre, claiming he needs the toilet. His behaviour, however, signals something else is going on. Wandering through unfamiliar surroundings, he crosses paths with a number of strange characters and has a brief encounter with Phoenix Gulzar Brown. Then, without warning, he vanishes without a trace.

Back in the car park, Leela and Mercedes are deep in conversation, and do not notice that Gemma’s associates are watching them. When Ste fails to return, panic sets in and the pair head back to the village to raise the alarm.

Four suspects and a village on edge

The disappearance sends the community into a spin. Everyone pulls together to search for Ste, but the mood quickly sours as fingers start pointing. James Nightingale, given his recent clash with Ste, immediately falls under suspicion. Sienna Blake (a recently released convict) is also in the frame. According to Digital Spy, there are four suspects altogether in the mystery surrounding Ste’s whereabouts, suggesting the story will throw up plenty of misdirection before any resolution arrives.

Adding another layer of complexity is the recent return of Lucas, Ste’s son, to the village. Digital Spy reports that Lucas is back in the picture just as his father goes missing, a development that is bound to shape how the storyline unfolds over the coming weeks. Whether his return is connected to the disappearance or simply adds emotional weight to those searching for Ste remains to be seen through the episodes themselves.

The pivotal scenes will take place in Chester city centre, which raises the question of whether that is where Ste ultimately ended up after his disappearance at the shopping centre.

Filming inside a working shopping centre

Kieron Richardson, who plays Ste, described the shoot as a genuine logistical challenge. ‘I loved filming Ste vanishing in Runcorn Shopping City with real-life shoppers, over 70 supporting artists and an amazing crew,’ he said. ‘People will see how busy the shopping centre was on the day, it really is like searching for a needle in a Ste Hay-stack.’

Richardson also spoke about the unusual approach to production: ‘It was predominantly all shot in one take. It felt very different and quite unexpected, which is quite apt for this missing story. Just when you think you know what is going on, expect more of the unexpected.’

The one-take format and the presence of genuine shoppers going about their day gives the sequence a raw, unscripted energy that Richardson suggests viewers will feel immediately. It is a bold creative choice for a soap, and one that leans into the chaos of a busy public space in a way studio filming simply cannot replicate.

The storyline is set to build steadily across the autumn before coming to a head in early October. Hollyoaks airs on Mondays to Wednesdays, with its E4 broadcast at 7pm each night, following the Channel 4 streaming premiere at 7am the same day.
