Get Your Teen Back on Track

When you have a teen, who has started to lose their way and begins acting out, it can be hard to know what to do to get them back on the right track. It’s important to act quickly because things can spiral out of control in a very short period of time.

Talk to Your Teen

The first thing you need to do is talk to your teen. See if there is anything going on in their life that’s making them lash out at you. There are times when teens lash out because they don’t know how to handle the emotions that they’re feeling. Talking to your teen may help you learn what is going on in their life and allow you to provide them with the help and guidance that they need.

Take Your Teen to A Counselor

If your teen has a lot of pent up emotions or seems withdrawn from the family, take him or her to see a counselor. They need to be able to talk to someone about the way they’re feeling and feel safe to open up if something bad is happening in their lives. There are many times when teens will act out if someone is hurting them physically, mentally, or sexually because they don’t know how to handle the chaos they are experiencing.

Change the Diet Your Teen Eats

Food can have an effect on people’s personalities, especially when they’re younger. Try limiting the amount of sweets and processed foods that your teen eats, and instead, provide them with healthier options that give them the nutrients that their bodies need to be healthy and strong. It can also help them to have less mood swings because they aren’t eating as much artificial and processed foods.

Make Your Child Go to School

Your child needs to go to school in order for them to have a solid foundation for their future. It can be difficult to make a teen go to school if they don’t want to though. If all else fails, contact the truancy officer at your child’s school and have him or her take them to school each day to make sure that they’re going. It’s important to let your child know that states like Florida have laws prohibiting kids from missing ample school time. Let them know that you both can get into legal trouble if they don’t go to school.

Spend More Time with Your Teen

Some teens act out simply because they’re starving for attention. They want so badly for someone to pay attention to them and will act out in horrible ways in order to get the attention that they crave. Try spending more time with your child and learning what things they like to do. It may allow you to build a bond with them and could help to change their attitude and the way they’re acting. Places like Florida and California have ample amusement parks, museums, and parks so finding something fun to do with your teen shouldn’t be overly difficult to do.

It’s important to make sure to time the activities properly though. You need to be sure that you don’t allow them to do fun things right after they have done something that they shouldn’t have done. This will make them feel as though they are being rewarded for their poor behavior.

Help them Overcome a Drug Addiction

There are times when you will see a huge shift in your child’s attitude. Pay close attention to your child to see if you can tell that they have started to use drugs. See if they have lost weight or if their eyes appear red or glossed over. Notice if they seem to sleep more often or have a hard time tracking a conversation.

If you think that your child is battling an addition to drugs, take them to one of the methadone clinics in the area. The clinician can evaluate them to see if they are addicted to any drugs and provide them with the help that they need to overcome them. Many people assume that rehab treatment is only available for adults, but it is available for teens, as well. There are many great Florida methadone clinics available that cater to teens; they understand the care that a teen needs is different than that of an adult, ensuring they get the proper care for their full recovery to be able to take place.

Consider Moving to a New Location

If you think that part of the problem is the people your teen is hanging out with, you may need to restrict them from being around those people or possibly move to a different location. Simply moving a few miles up the road to a home that is located in a different school district could greatly change the environment that your child is in on a daily basis. You want to be sure that your child is not surrounded by people making the wrong decisions or they too may start making the same decisions.

Get Your Child Involved in Extracurricular Activities

If your child is preoccupied with other activities, they will not have time to get into trouble or to do drugs. Try to get your teen to try something new that they have never tried before in the past. They may enjoy playing a sport, playing an instrument, or taking an art class. You want them to be able to find something that they love to do so that they can focus on that rather than other negative things in their life.

If you start to notice positive changes in the way your child behaves, let them know. Praise them as much as you can so that they know that you notice a difference in them and appreciate it. Once your child receives positive reinforcement, it may spark the desire to keep going with them. Teens have an inner desire to please their parents and setting clear, defined boundaries can show them how much you care and ensure that they don’t make a decision that could negatively impact them for the rest of their lives.
